UN warns that world risks becoming ‘uninhabitable hell’ for millions unless leaders take climate action

There has been a “staggering” rise in natural disasters over the past 20 years and the climate crisis is to blame, the United Nations said Monday.Researchers pointed to a failure of political and business leaders to take meaningful action to mitigate the impact of climatic changeand stop the planet from turning into “an uninhabitable hell for millions of people.”

Not mentioned in the article is the possibility that the earth’s entire equatorial region, and other regions like Bangledesh and even the Southern United States, could warm so much that they become uninhabitable for parts of the year. If temperatures increase enough, particularly in areas of high humidity, it may be impossible for people to go outside without overheating. From the same article:

Currently, the world is on course for a temperature increase of 3.2 degrees Celsius or more, unless industrialized nations can drastically cut their greenhouse gas emissions.

The time for a global, high-intensity, concerted effort to solve the global climate crisis is now.

Many articles over the last several weeks have been pointing out the gigantic warning that humanity is receiving from the massive loss of ice in the Arctic. It is an undeniable sign of the planet’s warming, and it is only going to get worse unless humanity takes action:

“The Arctic is warming twice as fast as the rest of the world,” Dr. Enric Sala, executive producer and National Geographic’s Explorer-in-Residence said in a panel discussion following the film’s premiere on Oct. 7. “The Inuit are really the human face of global warming, and all these activities that produce all this carbon pollution are not in the Arctic region, they are mostly in a world where we are or farther south, but they are suffering the consequences.”

Climate scientists and activists responded with alarm Thursday to reporting that this is the latest date in recorded history that “the main nursery of Arctic sea ice in Siberia has yet to start freezing,” another example of the present-day consequences of human-caused global heating. According to the Guardian, “The delayed annual freeze in the Laptev Sea has been caused by freakishly protracted warmth in northern Russia and the intrusion of Atlantic waters, say climate scientists who warn of possible knock-on effects across the polar region.”

In August, Adrienne White – an ice analyst at the Canadian Ice Service who monitors the Canadian Arctic for changes in sea ice – was reviewing satellite imagery when she spotted something remarkable. The enormous Milne ice shelf, which was the last intact ice shelf in Canada and which White had studied closely before as a PhD student, was dissolving. A huge chunk larger than Manhattan, roughly 43% of the shelf, broke off in one piece. And as it collapsed into the ocean, it took with it much of the equipment her former colleagues had left there.

North Korea Unveils Missiles Able to Strike Any Location in the United States

In an unprecedented show of force, North Korea held a parade to unveil its latest massive missiles able to strike the United States:

Analysts said the missile, which was shown on a transporter vehicle with 11 axles, would be one of the largest road-mobile intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) in the world if it becomes operational. “This missile is a monster,” said Melissa Hanham, deputy director of the Open Nuclear Network. Also displayed were the Hwasong-15, which is the longest-range missile ever tested by North Korea, and what appeared to be a new submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM)… The new ICBM is likely intended to dispel doubts about North Korea’s ability to strike the continental United States, and an implicit threat that they are preparing to test the larger missile, said Markus Garlauskas, a former U.S. intelligence officer for North Korea. “If the Hwasong-15 could carry a ‘super-large’ nuclear warhead to anywhere in the U.S., then the natural question is what can this larger missile carry?,” he said.

North Korea is currently thought to hold a stockpile of 30-40 nuclear weapons:

North Korea has a military nuclear weapons program and, as of early 2020, is estimated to have an arsenal of approximately 30-40 nuclear weapons and sufficient production of fissile material for 6-7 nuclear weapons per year. North Korea has also stockpiled a significant quantity of chemical and biological weapons.

China adds anti-satellite weapons to its arsenal

Imagine that a country, or multiple countries, decided to start destroying orbiting satellites with missiles. Blowing up a satellite would create thousands of pieces of space debris, meaning that all satellites are threatened. In the worst case scenario, the new debris starts running into other satellites to create a chain reaction. This video helps to understand the problem:

The Type 055 is equipped with a dual-band radar system that has anti-stealth and anti-satellite capabilities in low-Earth orbit, China Central Television (CCTV) reported over the weekend. The anti-satellite capability in particular has prompted discussions among military observers. Some of the advanced radar systems produced by modern technologies can detect low-Earth orbit aircraft, which often circulate the Earth at an altitude of 300 to 500 kilometers, Wang Ya’nan, a Chinese aviation and space expert and the chief editor of Beijing-based Aerospace Knowledge magazine, told the Global Times on Sunday. If the radar system has a high enough performance, it can not only detect, but also track the satellites, Wang said, noting that this means the radar can then guide weapons to attack the satellites.

As these capabilities proliferate, it could then become a “who has more to lose” situation. If a small country with no satellites in orbit wants to create havoc, it can start blowing up satellites with impunity.
