EMP Attack

The Doomsday Book” by Marshall Brain features a fascinating chapter on the threat of an EMP attack. The idea is that a foreign enemy detonates a nuclear bomb at high altitude to generate a strong electromagnetic pulse (EMP) across a nation. This pulse would have no effect on humans, but could strongly affect both the power grid and individual electronic devices. If the national power grid goes down (due to massive damage throughout the system caused by the pulse) and the nation takes a long time to recover, the results could be catastrophic. These videos help to illustrate the EMP chapter in the book:

High-altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP): Potential Impacts, and EPRI Research Approach
From the video’s description: “High-altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP) refers to the electromagnetic pulse that is created by the high-altitude detonation of a nuclear weapon. Numerous stakeholders assert that a HEMP attack is probable, and its impact would be catastrophic to the power system infrastructure. However, a science-based approach is needed to assess the true impact of this threat. To address this gap, EPRI has developed a comprehensive research plan that will be carried out over a three-year period. This video provides an overview of science of high-altitude electromagnetic pulses and EPRI’s three-year research plan.”
